Safety Issues for Our Seniors:

Slip-Resistant Finishes:

Slip and fall accidents occur most frequently in the elderly.

Tack down, or get rid of your throw rugs. They cause more problems than they are worth. At least 50% of all elderly slip and fall accidents are caused by loose throw rugs.

*It is always a good idea to wear footwear that has non-slip soles. Non-slip socks are available as well.*

If the bathtubs and showers don't have a slip-resistant finish (find out by running your hand over it) to prevent falls, use a non-slip mat, or install strips or decals in bathtubs or showers to help prevent slipping.

Electrical and phone cords are also very hazardous, and easily tripped over.

Grab Bars:

Install grab bars in all bathtubs and shower stalls. Firmly anchor them into the wall studs with long screws.

Handrails:

Every set of stairs, whether inside or outside your home, should have handrails securely mounted to both sides of the stairs.

Sufficient Lighting:

Use night-lights near bathrooms, bedrooms, and stairwells. Make sure stairwells and hallways are always adequately lit. Provide sufficient lighting to all walkways and entrances to your home.

Food safety and food borne illnesses:

Watch those expiration dates on your foods.
It’s costly to throw away food that wasn’t consumed on time,
But considerably less than the health cost that you will have to
Face if you eat out dated foods.
This is a terrific "job" for the grandchildren,
They can help you go through your refrigerators/freezers/cupboards
to check the expiration dates on food packages.
"When in doubt, throw it out!"
Most of the cases of what we consider to be "The stomach flu"
are actually symptoms resulting from eating incorrectly prepared, incorrectly stored
or expired foods.

Medications:

Many of our Seniors are taking a variety of medications.
When emergency personnel arrive at your house, one of the first things
they will have to do is list all of those medications that you are
taking.
To save valuable time, we have created a Medical Emergency Information
Sheet
for you to fill out.
This can be kept in your purse or wallet, as well as in your home in an
easy to find place.
